Original Art By Tammy Carmona

Tammy Carmona’s fine art collection showcases her creative talents as well as personal philosophy. With her complex life story and international influences, she’s never at a loss for artistic expression.

Bolstered by a thorough understanding of oil painting techniques and a bold, fearless attitude, these factors produce emotional, meaningful pieces that speak volumes.

Differentiating herself from the commercialized / generative art culture, where anyone can throw paint onto a canvas, or copy/paste clip art into PhotoShop, and call themselves an “artist”, Tammy paints what she truly feels, with passion and emotion evident in every piece.

Rich colors, real stories, and thoughtful compositions are the core strengths of Tammy’s artwork. With themes of overcoming adversity, synthesizing meaning from experiences, and finding eternal beauty in transient phenomena, her oil paintings and mixed-media creations have found a place in clients’ homes – and hearts.

Never content with her accomplishments, Tammy is experimenting with digital art and NFT creations alongside traditional oil painting. She also creates 3-dimensional, “interactive” mixed-media assemblages, working with oil, gold leaf, crystals, 3D laser-cut metal, and other materials – creating artwork to fit any mood or occasion.

Tammy was born in Israel and raised in New York. She currently divides her time between New York City and Miami, and enjoys the variety of cultural influences, attitudes, and art scenes in both cities.

“The Unsilent Woman”
Original Oil Painting + NFT Collection by Tammy Carmona

Overview

“The Unsilent Woman” is a mixed-media art work by Tammy Carmona. The piece depicts a female shape morphed with a violin. 3D elements – bow, strings, hair, and butterfly clip – create a multi-textural experience.

This is an intensely emotional piece that symbolizes Tammy’s battle with breast cancer. Every part of this image has a significance related to cancer.

When Tammy was initially diagnosed, it seemed that the treatment would involve operation on only 1 side – hence the “half-woman / half-violin” theme.

A violin is hollow inside, reflecting the feeling of desolation that comes with hearing words like “malignant”, “invasive”, and “multi-focal”. In a moment, everything stops and you feel like an empty shell.

The woman is facing away from the viewer, anonymous. Her identity doesn’t matter – she’s Every Woman who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Holding her hair is also symbolic – one of the most-common effects of radiation and chemotherapy is losing hair. Along with mastectomy, this is a de-feminizing and de-humanizing experience. She’s touching her hair (extensions), wishing to remember the feel and texture of it before it’s gone for months, taking away some of her beauty with it.

The brooch is a butterfly, symbolizing hope and rebirth. Breaking free of the cocoon, it turns into something beautiful and flies away into a bright future.

The artwork also synthesizes feminist influences and philosophy, celebrating the power of the woman overcoming life’s challenges. Despite loss, despite pain, she’s still here, ready to make beautiful music. This is the essence of a survivor – someone who doesn’t let tragedy break them, but finds strength in pain instead. She will not let pain or disease silence her creativity. She’s The Unsilent Woman.

Created on a large canvas (48″ x 60″), with oil paints and specialty materials, it’s available for purchase as original, prints, and various NFT (Non-Fungible Token cryptocurrency) formats.

“The Unbroken Heart”
Oil Painting by Tammy Carmona

“To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.”

– Robert Muller

The Japanese art of “Kintsugi” is a visual expression of Zen philosophy. Objects that are accidentally broken are repaired, and the glue is dusted with gold powder, creating a beautiful metallic accent. Instead of trying to hide the repair, Kintsugi treats it as part of the object’s history, accepting what happened and making things better.

The same thought is behind the Zen attitude toward life in general – whatever happens, it should become part of the life’s mosaic. Mistakes? Learn from them. Enemies? Forgive them. Weaknesses? Overcome them.

Everything that breaks can be repaired – and it can be repaired beautifully, to become stronger than before. This is the message of this painting – even if your background, your history, is damaged, that’s not a reason for your heart to break. You’re stronger than whatever happened.

This theme is echoed in many other cultures, particularly in their religious and spiritual aspects. Christians have “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change”; Russian Orthodox Church has “while ascending – accept, so that while accepting, you’ll ascend”; Reform Judaism offers a mantra “Gam zu l’tovah!” (“this is for the good, as well”).

No matter what continent, culture, or time period, you can find the same common thread – facing your challenges, fears, and traumas makes you more resilient, more understanding, more compassionate.

Even though gold leaf is an expensive and challenging medium, I felt that in order to truly create a Kintsugi-style work, nothing less than actual gold would suffice. Working with gold leaf requires patience and precision, so creating these accents was a very meditative and therapeutic experience. The end result is completely worth it, too!

“Fifty Shades Of Perception”
Oil Painting by Tammy Carmona

“Fifty Shades Of Perception” is an abstract geometric work, with two contrasting gradients in Orphic Cubism style.

The base layer, in shades of black and gray, represents the ups and downs of life. The colors are mixed and shaded from one to another – since things are rarely black or white; everything is a matter of perception.

The brilliant blues of the upper layer symbolize a positive attitude. The gradients are arranged opposite each other – the darkest parts of the base layer are paired with the lightest parts of the upper layer.

The message is: “when things are hardest, that’s when optimism is needed the most.”

“Prayer At The Wailing Wall”
Commissioned Oil Painting by Tammy Carmona

“The Wailing Wall” – oil painting with impasto enhancements & 3D greenery elements.

The Wailing Wall, Western Wall, or HaKotel HaMa’aravi, is the last remnant of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple. It’s one of the holiest sites of Judaism, and a testament to the ancient Jews’ ability to build massive structures without the aid of machinery. It’s also symbolic of the Jewish nation itself – no matter how many empires tried to destroy them, they’re still standing, like that wall.

For over 2,000 years, religious Jews have been coming to pray at the Wall, and to leave prayers written on paper in the crevices between stones – over 1 million every year. Even though the Temple itself was destroyed (and the Dome of the Rock built on top of it), the orthodoxy states that the Divine Presence never left the Wall, so praying there has a very special significance.

This painting was commissioned by a customer, with a request for orange and brown tones to match the interior of the room. I used a combination of paints and techniques to create the various textures of the Wall and the surrounding elements.

The greenery throughout the painting is actual miniature artificial trees & bushes, meant for model landscaping. I wanted to add a small yet special touch, making the painted scene pop out in 3D.

“Serenade”
3D Mixed-Media Artwork by Tammy Carmona

“Art is how we decorate space. Music is how we decorate time.”
Jean-Michel Basquiat.

This mixed-media composition takes classical elements of music, and combines them with art in a decadent, delicious “feast for the eyes”.

The piano-glossy notes, the authentic violin bows and an actual violin, the laser-cut butterflies, the preserved roses – each element brings a different sensation and a different meaning.

Themes of rebirth and remembrance permeate this piece. The old violin is reborn with bursts of flowers, the old bows have found a new life supporting musical notes, the flowers are real preserved roses.

Check out the photos and the in-depth description below, with more analytical and technical details.

"Serenade" - 3D Mixed Media Composition by Tammy Carmona

“Serenade”

Mixed-media assemblage. Oil on panel, preserved flowers, recovered objects, artificial objects. Tammy Carmona, 2021.

There are those who claim “everything in art is already done, and overdone, and there’s nothing original left”. But that’s simply not true. The complexity of the human experience is infinite, and there will always be new art movements, conceptualizations, and approaches.

Every artist’s expression is unique, and the time to express oneself is always now. Whether executed in technologically sophisticated cutting-edge media, or time-tested classics like oil on canvas, art is eternal.

Jean-Michel Basquiat famously said, “Art is how we decorate space; music is how we decorate time”. But art is more than a decoration for a space, it’s a decoration for the soul. It’s a connection between the artist and the viewer, it’s an instant of time & concepts captured in media. Art decorates space and time – simultaneously!

Reveling in the complexity of art, this composition draws upon several movements, including Remodernism, Intentism, New Sincerity… and just the right touch of Surrealism. It’s envisioned with classical materials, and features familiar elements – yet it’s imbued with an artistic reimagination of these elements, creating a deliciously decadent visual.

The choice of violin and bows – all authentic instruments recovered from a luthier shop – synthesizes environmentally-conscious Upcycle thinking and the Kintsugi tradition of Japanese culture. Kintsugi traditionally focuses on repairing broken objects with a touch of gold; rather than hiding the repair, it boldly celebrates the break as a part of the object’s history. In this composition, the broken violin is re-cast in a lead role. Just as sounds used to emanate from its body, now flowers emerge. One kind of beauty ends, and another begins.

The flowers are real roses, preserved with a special process that immortalizes every detail – expressing defiance of the passage of time, in an elegant and haunting way. They’re finished with antiqued gold and silver paint, expressing the artist’s quest to capture the beauty of nature and preserve it in her art.

The bows are transformed from being a part of the instrument, to being a part of the structure, becoming the staff lines on which the notes depend. Just like the broken violin, they’re also reborn – even though they’ve become warped with time and lost the string tension, they’re still bringing musical notes to the delight of the audience.

The butterflies symbolize the freedom one’s soul feels when encountering the right melody. Their color is also an homage to the fashion of classical music and opera… black butterfly <> black bowtie <> black fortepiano.

The notes are done in laser-cut glossy black acrylic. The color and texture of the notes material evokes the rich blackness of a grand piano, and the sharpness of the laser-cut edges is an acknowledgment of the mathematical precision inherent in music.
